Sandy's: Busy local pub, good grub

By Ted Whipp, The Windsor Star - August 26, 2009

A neighbourhood pub filled with friendly people -- that's what this recession needs in a grim season of unemployment in Windsor.

The bonus is the burgers taste good, the beer list includes unexpected brews, like the original Pilsner Urquell, Kilkenny and Dos Equis, and service is efficient and attentive at the Riverside location on Wyandotte Street East near St. Rose.

The kitchen plays a good role, too, with care, focus and fresh-tasting ingredients. A burger with provolone cheese -- a signature special here named Sandy's Select and served with onions and mushrooms -- is more more than ample. Even the tomato tastes fresh.

The menu offers wide selection and a clever choice or two, such as baked beans as a substitute instead of fries. Hint: they're smoky-good, the fries, that is. And an appetizer platter can be custom-ordered, with a choice of four items from a list, $16.95. Hint: the sweet potato fries are a decent alternative to the usual apps.

Decor is pub style with TVs here and there, but still contemporary; booths at the rear offer seclusion from the bar. And the bar is busy.

The menu's ambitious, but the kitchen lives up to the challenge, capable of turning out appetizers and burgers, as well as full-on entrees like a New York steak. There's a house-made meatloaf, Asian stirfry and even a jambalaya. Most under $15 and none sampled. All the more reason to return after the hale and hearty Sandy's burger for $9.95. Halibut has become a popular special on Fridays only.

Open four years now, Sandy's continues to attract business from the busy commuter route and nearby WFCU Centre, says owner Sandy Limoges. Her hospitality background includes experience in downtown Windsor.

Bottomline: Recession be damned, Sandy's isn't taking part, thank you.
